Born on Staten Island in 1763, brought to England as a boy, and by his forties the most famous bare-knuckle boxer in the country. He trained Tom Molineaux, ran a pub off Leicester Square, taught boxing to gentlemen who would not have shaken his hand in the street, and in 1821 served as an usher at the coronation of George IV. He fought his last bout at fifty.
Georgian England's boxing scene was Black long before anyone wrote it that way.
