Secret Writers Club | Two Tone Mug | Originology | Black History X
By candlelight, by code, by invitation only.
The Secret Writers Club Two Tone Mug from Black History X carries SECRET WRITERS CLUB above KEMET · TIMBUKTU · ETHIOPIA, a winged scarab at the centre, the members' mark and ESTD 1766 beneath.
Writing it down was the dangerous part.
In 1772 Phillis Wheatley had to stand before a panel of eighteen Boston men and satisfy them that she had written her own poems. They signed a document attesting to it, and the book could not be published without that page. She was nineteen, enslaved, and the most accomplished poet in the room.
The work was never in doubt. The permission was.
This one is for everyone who writes anyway.
Why you'll love it:
- Winged scarab crest with the three cities and ESTD 1766
- By candlelight, by code, by invitation only — the line that carries it
- Sister range to the Secret Book Club pieces
- Printed both sides, so it reads whichever way it sits
- A meaningful gift that gets used, not stored
- Part of the Originology Collection for BHX
